5 Best Perks Of YouTube TV (& 5 Drawbacks)

YouTube TV is a streaming television service offered by YouTube, one of the most popular video platforms online. YouTube TV is an American service that offers live TV and has content from more than 80 different television networks. The popularity of YouTube TV can be seen because it has more than 21 million subscribers. Started in 2017, the streaming service also offers a cloud-based DVR allowing you to record shows and store them for nearly nine months.

All the features offered make YouTube TV highly popular. If you were planning on subscribing, you might want to know more about this service, including the pros and cons. Here are the five best perks of subscribing to YouTube TV, along with five drawbacks. You can go through all these to help you make a decision.

What is YouTube TV?

With YouTube TV, you can stream video content from a variety of TV and movie platforms.

Streaming TV channels, cable networks, digital channels, and original web content from YouTube Red are all available on smart TVs, streaming boxes, computers, and mobile devices.

YouTube TV cost: What’s the price?

There is a monthly fee of $65 for YouTube TV. This is on par with YouTube TV’s main competitor, Hulu with Live TV, which also recently increased its price to the same amount but still offers fewer channels (although Hulu has exclusive original shows of its own).

YouTube TV channels: What do you get?

In addition, to live TV channels, YouTube TV offers content from YouTube Originals. There may be different options in your area, as New Yorkers can choose from 59 networks, including their local affiliates.

Previously, YouTube TV lacked the ViacomCBS channels. There have been eight new ViacomCBS channels added over the past year (BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1). Additionally, MTV2, TeenNick, NickToons, and IMDB were added in March 2021.

YouTube TV – The Perks

1. You get a free trial

When you are spending money on something, you need to test how it works before using it. This is why YouTube TV offers a two-week free trial. The trial will help you check how it works. You can subscribe to the trial with your Google account. This is a good perk offered, and you can make use of it before subscribing.

2. A large variety of channels offered

YouTube TV has a great perk for you in terms of the large number of channels on offer. There are movie channels like Turner for old movie fans. Kids can enjoy Cartoon Network and Disney. Nature fans would enjoy Nat Geo. NBC, Fox, MSNBC, and many more channels are available for subscribers.

3. You can record your favourite programs

The DVR option allows you to record your favourite shows. This will enable you to record the shows you like to see later when you are free. With a plethora of channels and shows, this is a great option allowing you to watch shows whenever you want. The recorded shows are available on the cloud for up to nine months.

4. Supports multiple devices

With YouTube TV, you don’t have to watch your favourite programs on TV. You can watch them on your smartphone, a tablet, or your laptop. It comes with an app that you can download and link to your smart TVs. Support is offered even for game consoles like Playstation 4. This is truly a great perk that gives you the convenience of watching whatever you like, wherever you like, and whenever you like.

5. YouTube TV is Simple and convenient to use

The YouTube interface is known to most internet users. So, using YouTube TV is easy for everyone. The best perk that comes with YouTube TV is that your entire family can enjoy using this service. Up to six accounts are allowed for each subscription, and you can use three screens at a time.

YouTube TV – The Drawbacks

1. You can’t skip ads

The shows that you can watch are recorded from the telecast of the original show on the channels. So, this means even the ads are displayed. There is no way of bypassing the ads, and you have to wait for the ad break to be over to continue watching.

2. It is not cheap

YouTube TV claims to offer a price lesser than cable TV. But the bottom line is that you need to pay $65 every month. This is the price you need to pay without any add-ons. This is not definitely not cheap and is one of the cons of YouTube TV. If you want any of the add-ons, they will cost you more.

3. Limited shows and movies

There are a large number of shows and movies available in the library. However, it doesn’t mean you can watch any movie or show under the sky. There are limitations. Some movies are offered as add-ons. This means you need to pay extra to watch them live. When it comes to shows, some shows only offer the current season, and you may not have access to the old seasons.

4. There is no offline viewing option

Even though you can record your favourite shows using the DVR option, you need to be online to watch them. This is because the shows on stored on a cloud server. It would help if you had internet connectivity to watch them. If you are travelling and don’t have access to mobile data, you can’t watch your favourite shows.

5. Upgrades for more accounts/screens not possible

It is not possible to upgrade your subscription to add more accounts. Similarly, you can only use three screens simultaneously and cannot upgrade even if you are ready to pay more. If you have a large family and want more than three people to use YouTube TV at a time, the only option is to get one more subscription.

This would be costly.
