Danny Trejo and Robert Rodriguez are two big names in Hollywood. They have collaborated on several movies, with Machete and Desperado being the most popular.

Danny Trejo was born to Mexican-American parents in Los Angeles, CA, on May 16, 1944.

He was the son of Dionisio “Dan” Trejo, a construction worker and a second cousin to Robert Rodriguez. When Danny and Robert were filming Desperado, he didn’t know they were related.

While growing up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacoima, Trejo recalls never experiencing racism. Trejo later bought and lived in his childhood home. He was also a labor foreman in the construction industry before he began his film career.

In California, Trejo spent time in prison and jail between 1959 and 1969. According to him, his physical appearance is the reason he is getting into trouble. As a prisoner at San Quentin, one of the six prisons where he served his sentences, he became a boxer and joined a 12-step program that he credits with helping him overcome his drug addiction. As of 2011, he had been sober for 42 years!

During the writing of the screenplay for Runaway Train (1985), Edward Bunker, a former convict and respected crime author, recognized Trejo working as a youth drug counselor at the time.

Trejo had boxing skills from prison, and Bunker offered him $320 per day to train Eric Roberts, a movie star, for the boxing scene. A role in the film was offered to him by the film’s director, Andrei Konchalovsky.

From there, he began a successful filming career for decades to come.

Trejo currently appears in five or more films each year in varying genres, and is considered a prolific actor.

From Dusk Till Dawn, The Replacement Killers, Machete, and Desperado are some of his more well-known films.

Despite working with his cousin on multiple films, he only realized they were related when he worked on Desperado.

On June 20, 1968, Robert Antony Rodriguez was born in San Antonio, TX. His parents are Mexican-Americans Rebecca and Cecilio G. Rodriguez.

He started following his passion when he was just 11 and had a VCR with a camera that his father bought him.

As a student at St. Anthony High School Seminary, he had the opportunity to film school games as well. His employment was terminated after the first film was made because the games were shot in a cinematic manner.

Throughout high school and college, he continued making short films until beginning his professional filming career.

The Guinness Book of Records lists Robert’s film El Mariachi as the lowest budget movie to gross over $2.6 million. Robert spent only $7000 filming the movie.

His other credits include From Dusk Till Dawn, Spy Kids, The Faculty, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lvagirl, Planet Terror, and Machete.
