The menswear industry is betting on skirts for men as a fashion trend: ‘Very liberating’
Menswear designers reflect the realities of the new COVID-19 rules in their new collections, with skirts emerging as an emerging trend. According to Priya Elan, the deputy fashion editor at The Guardian, this surprising trend reflects how traditional dress codes have unchained men since the pandemic.
Some designers have included men’s dresses or men’s skirts in their upcoming fall/winter collections, including Stefan Cooke, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Burberry.
As reported by Women Wear’s Daily, Cooke’s Men’s Fall 2020 collection represents a “world of men’s fashion with intensity and discipline.”
Designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin, born in Brussels and designs for men and women, agreed.
The Guardian quoted him as saying. “I find the concept of men in skirts liberating.”
This is great fun, to be able to wear something that normally belongs to women and still maintain a believable look.
The Swarovski miniskirt “Vichy,” one of his hard-to-make pieces, took him “months of work,” he told Vogue. Whether they’re from Mexico or Australia, his clients – “they’re all quite young men” – don’t seem to care.

Riccardo Tisci, the Creative Director at Burberry, has also explored the trend. At the debut of Burberry’s menswear collection last month, he said he wanted to “celebrate freedom of expression.”
According to an interview with Vogue Germany published Wednesday, Instagram influencer Mark Bryan, 61, said: “By breaking free from stereotypes, we are freeing ourselves from a great burden.”
The idea of men in skirts on the runway is not new, according to GQ Australia. Many of the ’90s’ top designers showed it in their collections. But it is now going viral in a “surprising low-key” way.
