It’s impossible to ignore what’s hidden beneath the masks of recognizable characters in Alex Solis’ illustrations.
Ever wonder if the characters you see on TV, movies and in comic books are hiding something behind their masks, Look at these illustrations.
Have you ever had the feeling that your favourite character is hiding something from you?
“Icons Unmasked” is an oddly fascinating series of illustrations by Wisconsin-based artist Alex Solis, also known as “alexmdc” and “oddworx.” The series reveals the identities of famous pop culture characters in an interesting and intriguing way.
To see who is behind familiar characters like Deadpool, Patrick Star, Rick and Morty, Yoda, and even politicians, he removes the mask of each one and exposes who is really inside. The artist does not choose the characters by chance; you’ll notice the similarities among a few of them, which makes the artist wonder if anything can be truly original nowadays.
“Do you ever wonder if characters in TV shows, movies, and comic books are hiding something?
Do you think they may really be someone – or something – else? Solis told Bored Panda that this project arose from the fact that pop culture is such an important part of our lives.
In movies, video games, or commercials, we often feel deja vu when a new character appears. The way they grin, how they laugh, or how they stare eerily at you feels eerily familiar.
It made me think. Do we ever see anything that is 100 percent original? Would such experiences be nothing more than our minds piecing past experiences together to create something that feels new and unique?”
“In Icons Unmasked, I’m trying to bring a new sense of discovery to characters everyone has seen hundreds of times. I wanted to recreate the experience of what it might be like to see one iconic character from your childhood for the first time as an adult,” Solis continued.
