“Stranger Things The Fourth Season is My Favorite”: David Harbour on His Character Jim Hopper
There are hints that the next season will draw inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic.
The highly anticipated fourth season of “Stranger Things” will answer the biggest question of all: how did Hopper survive the “Stranger Things 3” finale? David Harbour’s fan favourite character last appeared as he sacrificed himself to close the gate between Hawkins and the Upside Down. A second “Stranger Things” teaser trailer revealed that Hopper survived and was now in prison in Russia.
No matter how the resurrection works out, Harbour has told Total Film that Harbour’s resurrection arc will be similar to Gandalf’s in “The Lord of the Rings” series.
From the very beginning, Harbour said, he had those discussions with the Duffer brothers. We have always liked the idea of Gandalf’s resurrection – that he fights the Balrog, then becomes Gandalf the White. The character is being raised mythologically. And Hopper, in a sense, has had to change. I mean, it cannot continue the way it is. He has to find a way to go forward.
Hopper’s Return
Hopper’s return was never confirmed between the “Stranger Things 3” finale and the “Stranger Things 4” teaser, but Harbour knew he would return in a role that made him the “Stranger Things” version of Gandalf the White.
He explained, “We knew. We’d talked about it. I wanted to preserve the fantasy for everyone. And now we’re in such a strange position with so much media; everyone wants to talk to me about it.”
Hopper’s backstory will be revealed in “Stranger Things 4”. “Stranger Things 2” reveals Eleven found boxes labelled “Dad,” “Vietnam,” and “New York.” This information will be revealed in the new season.
Harbour is delighted to reveal this part of the character. “It’s one of the things I’ve known since the first frame of the first shot, and we haven’t discussed it yet.”

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for “Stranger Things 4,” but it is expected to debut after the pandemic in 2021.

His relationship with Allen dates back to October 2019, when they were spotted in New York City holding hands and kissing. Earlier this year, they attended the SAG Awards red carpet together for the first time.
