Avatar the Last Airbender is one of the greatest animated series of all times that aired originally on Nickelodeon. Fans rated the series highly and loved the characters, art direction, soundtrack, themes and humour. Set in the Asiatic world, the story deals with people who can manipulate or ‘bend’ one of the four natural elements of air, fire, earth and water. The “Avatar” is the only one who can bend all the four elements and is entrusted with maintaining peace in the four nations of the world.

It won a Genesis Award, five Annie Awards, Kid’s Choice Award, a Primetime Emmy Award as well as Peabody Award.

ViacomCBS announced Avatar Studios, “a new division of Nickelodeon centered on developing animated series and films set in the Avatar universe.” Clearly, then, there are big plans in store for Avatar: The Last Airbender, and with any luck, we may just see Ryan Reynolds turn up somewhere in the franchise.

When did Avatar the last Airbender come out?

The three seasons of the animated television series aired on Nickelodeon from February 2005 and concluded in July 2008. Each season had about twenty episodes, but for the last season that had a bonus episode. The series is now available on Netflix.

Anime refers to the computer and hand-drawn animation originating in Japan. ‘Anime’ in Japanese denotes all animated work regardless of its origin or style. In this sense, Avatar the Last Airbender qualifies as anime. However, for the rest of the world apart from Japan, anime refers specifically to Japanese animation and animation created and produced in Japan. When you look at the series from this perspective, it is not an anime.

A similar style of animation created outside of Japan is called anime-influenced animation. Avatar the Last Airbender was produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios in the U.S. and created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. The show combines American cartoons and anime, although the theme is heavily based on Asian cultures and imagery.

Avatar Aang – Aang is the protagonist of Avatar the Last Airbender. While he reincarnates cyclically to maintain the world balance, he is carefree and fun-loving. While he is typically frivolous, he becomes serious whenever there is a crisis. He shows key traits of Buddhism such as vegetarianism and a belief that violence and war are unjustifiable.

The series revolves around the 12-year-old Avatar (Aang) and the last survivor among Air Nomads. Air Nomads are a nation of peaceful people who practice airbending and their four air temples are located in four corners of the globe.

Katara – Katara is Aang’s best friend initially and becomes his girlfriend later and eventually, his wife. She is the one who masters the art of waterbending and teaches it to Aang. As a waterbender, Katara can heal injuries and turn water into ice to cut through objects. She later also learns ‘bloodbending,’ which involves the manipulation of liquids in a living creature.

Sokka- Sokka is Katara’s elder brother and belongs to the Southern Water Tribe. While he has no bending powers, he uses a machete, metallic boomerang and later, a sword made from a meteorite. Resourceful and ‘jack-of-all-trades,’ Sokka provides comic relief in the series. Sokka and Katara rescue Aang from the suspended animation state he is in for hundred years.

Appa – Appa is the animal guide, male flying bison, and spirit companion of Aang. Aang’s group uses Appa as the mode of transport for going around the world. Actually a cross between a manatee and bison, Appa can use his tail to whip up strong gusts of air.

Momo- Momo is the winged Lemur that Aang finds in the Southern Air Temple and keeps as his pet. Momo helps the protagonists in their adventures while providing many laughs.

Zuko – Zuko is the Fire Lord who earlier was the exiled prince of the Fire Nation. Zuko is a master of firebending and in using double broadswords. He eventually joins Aang and becomes the latter’s firebending teacher.

Iroh – Uncle Iroh is a firebending master and was the heir to the throne of Fire Nation before his Ozai, his younger brother superseded him to become the Fire Lord. Iroh is not hostile unlike other firebenders, but is friendly and a foodie.

The Avatar franchise also includes a novel series, comics series, animated sequel series, a live-action film made by Manoj N. Shyamalan in 2010 and a live-action remake produced for Netflix. It is streaming on Netflix since May 2020 in the U.S. and Canada while it is also available on Prime Video as of January 2021.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation TV series of Avatar: The Last Airbender is still going ahead but controversy surrounds it. In August 2020, the two original creators departed the project and since then, skepticism around the series has grown. The Last Airbender‘s live-action Netflix series.

TheIlluminerdi reported in February 2021 (although not confirmed) that Katara would be the older sibling in Netflix’s live-action remake at 16 with Sokka being 14 and then reiterating that Aang would be around 12.
