Channelate’s Funny and Dark Adult Comics With Unexpected Endings

Cartoons for adults who enjoy dark humour comix.

The creator of Channelate, an absurd blend of dark and often hilarious adult comics, hails from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Cartoonist Ryan’s short, three or four-panel comics began more than a decade ago as short, dark drawings filled with a sense of humour. However, he has expanded to include live-action cartoons on Youtube in recent years as he dedicates more time to his passion. So what is the origin of all this?

“When my family first got the internet in like 1998 – 99 I found this flash cartoon site called JoeCartoon.com,”

Ryan said.

“I knew from when I saw that, that I wanted to make web cartoons, but I literally had no idea how I would go about that. When I first started to post dark humour comics, my webcomic inspirations were The Perry Bible Fellowship, Thingpart, and Cyanide and Happiness.”

Although his style of drawing is clean and straightforward, his sense of humour is anything but. In my opinion, Channelate will appeal to your dark, cynical side. Giving you those explosive snort-laughs you can’t control, a kind of laughter that seems to come out of nowhere. This is the best kind of laughter!

It kind of reminds you, South Park, a bit, doesn’t it? “I was inspired South Park a ton,” Ryan said. “ looking up to Trey Parker and Matt Stone a lot. I had been a huge Simpsons fan as a kid, and when South Park first aired, it blew my mind. It was my kind of humour. Something I hadn’t seen anywhere else.”

About Ryan’s comics for adults, he says his process is quite simple compared to some other cartoonists he has spoken to, but making Channelate animated has been an interesting challenge. “I use Adobe Animate CC (Flash) on a Wacom Cintiq,” he explained. “I start by sketching first. Next, ink is applied to the image by creating a new layer, exported to Manga Studio 5 for colouring. Manga Studio used to be the only program I used to create my comics, but studying Flash was obligatory for my job, and I am a very hands-on learner, so I decided to start using it. I learned it fast because of that.”
